James was born in the spring of 1848 at Whitstable, Kent, to parents Henry Tilbe Humphrey, a mariner (1851), and Mary Jarritt.
After leaving the ministry James returned to Whitstable where he worked as a watchmaker, repairer and dealer. He remained a bachelor.
James died in February 1924 at Whitstable. He was buried on 9 February 1924.
