Simons, John Alfred (1894-1950)
Transcription of Obituary in Minutes of Methodist Conference
Bom at Burringham, in Lincolnshire, in 1894, and was trained for the teaching profession. When the call came to become a minister of the Gospel he gave up his position as a teacher and entered the Primitive Methodist Ministry in 1924. He ministered on the Welsh border at Weobley and Ludlow, then in Market Rasen, and afterwards in a succession of Yorkshire circuits, the last of which was Ossett.
Here his health began to fail, but when he moved to Carlton in the Nottingham (East) Circuit it seemed for a time that he had recovered.
The trouble recurred, however, and the end came suddenly on 5th April 1950.
He was a man of wide knowledge and sound judgement, with administrative gifts which made him a capable Superintendent in more than one circuit. He was a fluent and sometimes eloquent speaker, but remained a teacher to the end. His pleasing personality won him many friends in all the circuits where he served.
