Samuel was born on 11 December 1796 at Denton, Lancashire, to parents George Smith and Mary Cooke. He was baptised on 1 January 1797.

Samuel authored the following.

Anecdotes, Facts, and Biographical Sketches Connected with the Great Revival of the Work of God in Raising Up and Progressing the Primitive Methodist Connexion: To which is Added an Account of the Introduction of Primitive Methodism Into Lancashire , 1872

Family

Samuel married Dinah Duckett on 13 January 1821 at Elvington. She was born on 4 August 1796 at Elvington and died on 9 April 1841. Samuel and Dinah had eight children.

  • Ann (1833-1884) – married William Harris, a PM Minister

  • Watson (1839-1876) – a joiner

Samuel married Mary Hannah Weston on 4 February 1842 at Haslingden. Mary was born on 1 October 1817 at Stockport  and died on 26 March 1886. Samuel and Mary had six children.

  • Elizabeth Dinah (1842-1915) – married John Bedlington Buglass, a PM Minister
  • Thomas (b1848)
  • Salkeld (b1850) – a farmer, emigrated to USA circa 1871.
  • Sarah (1852-1933) – married John Howarth, a clerk. Emigrated to Australia after his death and there married Reginald Davies Bolton.
  • Cuthbert (1854-1929) – emigrated to Australia initially in 1878 and finally in 1887.
  • Mary Hannah (1857-1876)

Samuel died on 11 January 1877 at Stockport.
