DEATH OF A VETERAN PRIMITIVE METHODIST.-The death occurred on Saturday at his residence in Lower Cambridge-street, Loughborough, of Mr. John Sim-mons, at the advanced age of 85. The parents of the deceased gentleman were the pioneers of the Primitive Methodist movement in Loughborough and district, and Mr. Simmons himself was an energetic worker in the cause until advancing years compelled him to relinquish active service. He has travelled thousands of miles preaching and speaking in connection with the mination, and was a familiar figure throughout district.
He was also an ardent temperance worker. He was formerly connected with the Swan-street church, but on the institution of the branch at Nottingham-road he became associated with the work there. The funeral took place on Wednesday after-noon, at the cemetery, the service being conducted at the Swan-street chapel by the Rev. B.A. Barron (circuit minister).
was played by Mr. Frank Faulks.

  • There’s some really interesting information on Thomas Simmons, his conversion to Methodism, his preaching style, his extensive circuit, his departure from the Primitive Methodists and uniting with the Free Gospellers in an article “A History of the Original Methodists” in “The Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society v36.1- a History of the Original Methodists – pages 24 to 25: https://biblicalstudies.org.uk/pdf/whs/36-1.pdf. If anyone ever comes across a photo of Thomas or his son John, also a PM lay preacher, I’d love to see them as I’ve found nothing so far!
