William was born in late 1873 at Torquay, Devon, to parents Henry Shapcott, an ironmonger (1881), and Mary Emma Cobley.

Census returns identify the following occupations for William.

• 1911 clerk in holy orders – assistant chaplain at H.M. Prison Dartmoor

He married Elizabeth Ann McDougall (1873-1954) in the spring of 1907 at Brampton, Cumberland.

William died on 8 January 1939 at Hendon, Middlesex.
