Thomas was born on 3 October 1818 at Hollington, Staffordshire, to parents John, a farmer, and Sarah. He was baptised on 17 October 1818 at St Mary & All Saints, Checkley, Staffordshire.
Census returns identify the following occupations for Thomas after he left the ministry. He settled at Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

- 1871 builder
He married Ann Corbett (abt1816-1864) in late 1845 in the Ashby de la Zouch Registration District, Leicestershire. Census returns identify two children.
- Thomas Corbett (1847-1920) – a bricklayer (1911)
- Sarah Ann (b abt1849)
Thomas died on 4 November 1880 at Ilkeston, Derbyshire.
