Suddards, Jane (nee Ansdale (Ansdell)) (1801-1892)

Family

Jane was born on 8 December 1801 to parents Captain James Ansdell and Mary. She was baptised on 29 December 1801 at Providence Independent Chapel, Hull, Yorkshire.

She worked tirelessly in the Hull circuit, in Weardale and the North-East of England.

She married William Suddards (abt1801-1883) on 23 August 1823 at St Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne. William was a fellow travelling preacher. Census returns identify five children.

  • William Law (abt1825-1894)
  • James (abt1827-1888) – a physician
  • Henry (1832-1856) – a medical student (1850)
  • George C (abt1842-1893) – a grain merchant (1870)
  • Charles Wetherill (1849-1926)

William retired from the itinerancy for financial reasons and they emigrated to the United States of America, arriving on 23 October 1833, where Jane continued to preach. They lived in New York, then in Philadelphia where William joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and became rector of Grace Episcopal Church and a Doctor of Divinity.

Jane died on 3 February 1892 at Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, and was buried in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
