Self, Thomas (1815-1872)

Transcription of obituary published in the Minutes of Conference by Daniel Moore

THOMAS SHAW was born at Wisbeach, in the year 1815, and was converted by the agency of the Primitive Methodists, in his native town, in the 20th year of his age. He was put upon the plan as a local preacher in 1830, and was made a class leader and superintendent of the Sunday-school in 1837; in which offices he laboured with success.

In 1839 he received a call from the Louth Clrcuit fo enter the ministry, and afterwards he travelled in twelve other stations, the last of which was Ripon. He had not been long thereon before his health gave way, and he almost lost his voice. This necessitated his applying for superannuation at the Conference of 1857. 

Thereafter he resided at Knaresbro’. For the last five years he was at times very much afflicted, and unable to leave his bed for weeks together. He was released from his sufferings July 26, 1872.

Family

Thomas was born in 1815 at Surlingham, Norfolk.

After leaving the ministry Thomas worked as a gardener (1871).

He married Elizabeth Newlove, nee Spenceley (abt1815-1887) in the spring of 1845 at Pickering, Yorkshire. Census returns identify three children.

• Simpson Helms (1846-1914)  – a seedsman & gardener (1871); a domestic coachman (1891)          
• Jemima Ann (b1847) – married George Godley, a shoemaker (1901), in 1872                  
• Robert (b1850) – a gardener (1871)              

Thomas died on 26 July 1872 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire.
