John was born on 21 August 1827 at Fawler, Berkshire.
He married Hannah Maria Probert (1832-1866) in the spring of 1856 in the Clifton Registration District, Gloucestershire. Census returns and birth records identify four children.
- John Evan Probert (b1859) – a book-keeper (1910)
- Mary Probert (1860-1933) – a milliner out of employment) (1881); a secretary (1930)
- Alice Munrow (1863-1940) – married Robert L Roos, a farmer, in 1885
- William Alexander (1865-1866)
He married Mary Ann Carter (1831-1881) in the summer of 1869 in the Cirencester Registration District, Gloucestershire.
John died on 10 February 1909 at Chicago, USA
