Wilson, George Leslie (1904-1988)

Transcription of obituary published in the Minutes of Conference

GEORGE LESLIE WILSON: born in Eastwood, Nottingham, on 29th May 1904. After training at Hartley College, he was, for two years, on the President’s List, serving mainly in the East End Mission. He travelled in the following Circuits: Bottesford, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Tebay, Barrow-in-Furness, Blackburn Clayton Street, Church Gresley, Workington, Gateshead South West, Dudley Old Hill and Derby Derwent. 

He requested that his obituary should include the information given above, plus these words: ‘He was ever amazed at his conversion in late teens, when Christ seemed to call from the Street, and always wondered why he should feel the call to the Ministry which the church confirmed’. 

He died on the 20th May 1988 in the eighty-fourth year of his age and the fifty-fifth of his ministry.

Family

George was born on 29 May 1904 at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, to parents Arthur Wilson, a grocer’s assistant (1939), and Jane Rockley.

He married Agnes Braithwaite (1907-1987) on 2 August 1937 in the Basford Registration District, Nottinghamshire. Birth records identify three children.

George died on 20 May 1988 at Derby, Derbyshire.
