Brittain, Obadiah Oldham (1828-1889)

Family

Obadiah was born on 6 July 1828 at Oldham, Lancashire, to parents John Brittain, a PM minister , and Rebecca Smith.

After leaving the ministry Obadiah became a teacher and school board officer.

He married Martha Thomas (1830-1902) in the spring of 1851 at Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Census returns identify nine children.

  • Ebenezer (1853-1922) – a foreman compositor (1911)
  • Jane Elizabeth (abt1855-1915) – a dressmaker (1891)
  • Harriet Rebecca (1857-1896) – married Arthur Ernest Holden, a school master, in 1882
  •  Lydia (1859-1937) – a dressmaker (1911)
  • Martha Hannah (1861-1886) – married Ralph Bates in 1885
  • Obadiah Oldham (1863-1932) – a printer’s manager (1911)
  • Kate Emma (b1865) – a book & shoe shop-woman (1891)
  • Ezra Jabez (abt1870-1902) – a rent & debt collector (1891); butcher’s book-keeper and cashier (1901)

Obadiah died on 29 April 1889 at Oldham, Lancashire.
