Brock, Frederick (1893-1956)

Transcription of obituary published in the Minutes of Conference

FREDERICK BROCK: born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1894, and the grandson of a Methodist minister. After leaving school, he became a junior reporter on the Melton Mowbray Times, which his father edited. He trained at Hartley College, entered the Primitive Methodist Ministry in 1916, and served in the following circuits : Douglas, Stoke and Longton, Nottingham, Dawley and Madeley, Helmsley, Otley, Rotherham, Melton Mowbray, Stafford, Bingley, Leeds, and Withernsea.

He was an outstanding and compelling preacher, with an original approach to his subject. He had a keen sense of humour, and a genuine interest in people which won him many friends. He was a prolific reader and a faithful pastor. He was a sick man when he came to his last circuit, but during the three months in which he was able to exercise his ministry he made an amazing impression not only upon his own congregations, but on the religious life of the whole community. He died on 30th March 1956, in the sixty-third year of his age and the fortieth of his ministry. His death was mourned with a sense of personal loss by all who knew him, but for him it was the triumph to which he had looked forward.
