Bennett, Mary (nee Palmer, nee Richards) (1839-1914)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.H.

Mary Richards Bennett died at Hasbury, where she was born, in her seventy-sixth year, on December 3rd, 1914. In youth she was active in the Church, as a teacher in the school, and then as a preacher of the Word. On her marriage to Mr. Palmer she removed to Old Hill, and after a few years’ widowhood was married to Mr. Joseph Bennett, and then united with the society at Harts Hill, in the Brierley Hill Circuit. At both places she is remembered for her piety and good works. After Mr. Bennett’s death she returned to Hasbury.

She took a great interest in the life of the Church, resumed her place in the Sunday school, and was enthusiastic for the Bible Reading and Prayer Union. A devout woman, her love for the House of God was very strong. A friend to the poor and to all good causes, she belonged to a family whose sufferings for Free Church principles are well remembered in this neighbourhood.

Though death was sudden, it was not unwelcome. She was eager to be with her many friends “on the other side.” The funeral and “In Memoriam” services were conducted by the Circuit minister.
